Faith is the heart of Christianity, it is what allows us to get the free gift God gave us thru his Son, Jesus Christ.  Faith is understood by nearly all Christians, however a big majority of Christians don’t know that works is also a part of faith and Christianity as a whole.

James 2:26: For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

1 John 5: 3: For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.

The idea that mainstream Chrstians have about faith and works is what’s called blind faith.  Blind faith is the belief that you can be saved by God if you ONLY believe in God, but are not required to keep his commandments (works).  This is completely false as God commands us as his children to not only put our faith in Him, but to also keep his commandments, which is work.

However, remember that works do not save you either.  If works were the key to being saved, then Christianity would fall apart because none of our works come even close to what God says is good.  Jesus says that all our good works are as filthy rags.

This can be extremely confusing for a new believer because it is easy to interpret this message as being ill-logical because works are a part of keeping you saved, but are also not.

John 14:15: If you love me, you will keep my commandments

The link in the chain between faith and works is love.  God makes it clear that if we love Him, we will keep His commandments (good works).  It’s very similar to family, if you love your spouse, sibilings, parents, relatives etc. you will often do good works for them like bringing them their food, or buying them gifts.  We do this because we love them. This same example also applies to God because we love Him.

Overall, the most important aspect of all of this is to remember to love God and keep His commandments.  Remember that we don’t do works just to do them in the hope that they please God in a work based situation.  God doesn’t care one bit about our works, what He CARES about is our heart.  If we are rejoicing in God and loving Him with a joyful and glad spirit, God is pleased with us.
